How to Measure
Arrow weight
Weigh the complete, finished arrow — point, insert, shaft, fletching and nock all installed — on a grain scale. Manufacturer shaft weight alone won't give you an accurate number.
Arrow speed
A chronograph reading is the most accurate source. Working from bow specs instead, subtract roughly 10 fps for every inch your draw length runs under the rated length, and about 15 fps for every 50 grains your arrow runs over the rated arrow weight.
After your arrow weight and arrow speed are measured, use the formula below to calculate your Kinetic Energy.

what kinetic energy measures
Kinetic energy is the energy your arrow carries in flight, calculated from its weight and velocity. On impact, that energy is what drives the arrow through hide, muscle and bone.
More kinetic energy generally means deeper penetration, better performance on larger game, and more forgiveness on a less-than-perfect shot angle. But it's not the only number that matters — momentum, broadhead design and shot placement all play a part too.

Bow Speed
Faster bows generate more energy. Because speed is squared in the formula, even a small increase makes a real difference to your total.

Heavier arrows carry more energy and hold onto it better downrange, which improves penetration at distance.
